Yard maintenance and snow contracts in Morgan's Grant

Morgan's Grant sits at the northern edge of the built-up west end, and what defines it for this trade is exposure rather than soil. The frontages are open, several streets run with no mature windbreak, and the fields and Greenbelt land beyond March Road give the wind a long run at them. Snow drifts back across a cleared driveway within hours of the snowfall stopping, which matters because a seasonal contract triggered purely on accumulation depth will not send anybody out on a bright, still-cold morning. Ask any contractor here how drifting is handled before signing, and get the answer in writing.

Browsing pressure is the second defining factor and it is heavier here than in any other part of Kanata. Deer and rabbits work the bed margins and the bottom of cedar and yew hedges through the winter under snow cover, and tulips and hostas rarely survive a season unprotected. A hedge on these streets is often thin at the base for reasons no amount of pruning will fix, so winter screening, tree guards and a plant list chosen for browsing resistance do more than a trimming schedule.

The canopy is young, which changes the seasonal arithmetic. Autumn leaf volume on most of these lots is modest, so the fall visit is less about leaves than about winter preparation: downspout extensions aimed away from the foundation, irrigation blown out before the first hard frost, burlap on anything tender, and a decision made about where snow will be stored while the yard is still visible. Households here often over-buy the fall clean-up and under-buy the winter preparation.

Salt is the last local item. Properties within two or three metres of March Road or Klondike Road take spray every winter, and the damage appears as scorch on the road-facing side of hedges and bed planting in May rather than in December. Rinsing the exposed face in early spring helps slightly. Choosing a salt-tolerant species when replanting helps considerably more.
